Liutaio . Costruzione Bassi Artigianali

In questo spazio del sito vorrei segnalarvi
la produzione artigianale di bassi elettrici
realizzati da Filippo Battistelli
liutaio, bassista ed amico.
Dal 1990 e' titolare ad Urbino di un
laboratorio artigianale per la costruzione
di bassi. Lo studio del suono e
la conoscenza del legno
gli hanno permesso di realizzare
un particolare tipo di basso elettrico
dove, manico, corpo e ponte
sono assemblati insieme dalla sola
tensione delle corde.
In questi strumenti (creando speciali
incastri ed evitando l'uso di colle e viti)
la durata del suono si prolunga
a livelli incredibili. Questi bassi sono
concepiti seguendo i canoni della
liuteria classica.Il manico e' fissato
al corpo tramite un incastro, evitando cosi'
viti superflue dannose per il sustain;
il ponte e' semplicemente incassato
al corpo e bloccato allo stesso dalla
tensione delle corde inserite dal retro
dello strumento. I pochi incollaggi
presenti (in alcuni casi nessuno)
vengono effettuati con la tipica colla d'osso
che usavano gli antichi maesti liutai.
La tastiera e' in ebano, il corpo
(costituito da un pezzo unico)
in frassino o mogano.
Il ponte, ricavato da un blocco massiccio
e' realizzato completamente a mano,
con selletta unica per garantire il
massimo sustain. Il manico e' formato da
un unico pezzo in acero con il truss-road
in rovere o ebano (anziche' in alluminio)
per essere un tutt'uno con il manico
ed assicurare una migliore diffusione
delle vibrazioni. La circuitazione dei pickup
(anche essi artigianali) e' ridotta al minimo
per far si' che il suono rimanga
il piu' naturale possibile. L'amorevole cura
di ogni dettaglio rende questi bassi
altamente espressivi concedendo
al musicista la sensazione di sentirsi
un tutt'uno con lo stumento.
Insomma,se siete dalle parti di Urbino
via S.Chiara 11 vale  la pena
andare a visitare il laboratorio artigianale
di Filippo Battistelli.

In this section I would like to introduce you
to another bass player and good friend
of mine, Filippo Battistelli, who fabricates
hand made electric bass guitars.
Since 1990 he has had his own laboratory
in Urbino, Italy. Thanks to the studies
of sounds he followed and his knowledge
of woods he constructed a very
particulair type of electric bass,
where neck, body and bridge are held
together only by the tension of the strings.
On these instruments the sustain
of sound is incredibely longer than usual
because glue and screws are not used. 
These bass guitars are constructed
like classic instruments.
The neck is put on the body
in such a way that it does not have
any negative influence on the sustain;
the bridge is simply held on the body
by the tension of the strings which are
constructed on the backside
of the instrument. In few cases Filippo
uses glue, a typical kind of bone glue
like the ancient master luthiers did.
The board is made of ebony, the body
(out of one piece) of ash or mahogany.
The bridge is fully hand made out of one
massive block, to guarantee a maximum
sustain. The neck is one piece of maple
with the truss-road of oak or ebony
(not in alluminium!) to make it one
with the neck and to assure a better
diffusion of the vibrations.
The electronics of the pick up
(hand made even those) are brought
to a minimum to create a sound
as natural  as possible. 
The careful precision of any detail
makes these bass guitars extremely
sound expressive, giving the player
the sensation of being one
with the instrument.

is absolutely worth a visit.
